The Director of Mortal Kombat 11 Discusses a Skin Pack Featuring Original Arcade Actors

Director Ed Boon of Mortal Kombat 11 has confirmed that a classic arcade skin pack containing the cast’s original actors is in the works.

Mortal Kombat 11 director Ed Boon has indicated that a skin pack containing the series’ iconic arcade actors is considered. The graphically intense fighting game series began in an arcade, with each character being played by a live-action performer. While Mortal Kombat 11 changed the series forever with in-depth character customization and stunning graphics, a petition to remaster Mortal Kombat Trilogy shows that fans still care about the franchise’s retro roots.

Mortal Kombat 11 updated the original series while staying true to the franchise’s primary tenets of extreme brutality and skill-based fighting. Character customization was substantially improved in the new game, with each kombatant having multiple skins to choose from and three distinct item slots to customize. Thanks to their unique items, skins, Fatalities, and match start lines, each Mortal Kombat 11 character’s past and personality shine through. NetherRealm Studios, the game’s developer, continued to enhance it after its initial release, adding new characters and cosmetics to the base roster. NetherRealm released 1995 movie skins for Mortal Kombat 11 in November 2020, with performers from the franchise’s first live-action film giving their likenesses and voices.

Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon said that skins of the series’ original arcade game actors had been considered in response to a fan on Twitter. This hypothetical pack would replace the present versions of the franchise’s earliest characters with the actors that portrayed them in the arcade, similar to MK11’s 1995 movie skins. Sonya Blade’s original actress, Kerri Ann Hoskins, would take over the role in Mortal Kombat 11, with Hoskins even responding to Ed Boon on Twitter.

The Mortal Kombat fandom is passionate about the franchise’s arcade roots, fans begging that Ed Boon bring back the series’ old actors. Arcade1Up just revealed a Mortal Kombat arcade machine with free online multiplayer to pay homage to the harsh fighting game franchise’s origins. Mortal Kombat, MKII, MK3, and Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 are all included in this 1990s throwback, which will help gamers commemorate the series’ 30th anniversary. Players will challenge each other online from the old-school cabinet, giving the series’ first iterations a new lease on life.

While NetherRealm Studios support for Mortal Kombat 11 has stopped, there appears to be a slew of concepts that were never implemented. A skin pack featuring Mortal Kombat’s original arcade actors would be a fantastic homage to those vintage games, plus it would give the series’ newer entrants even more personalization choices. While MK11 did not acquire this requested skin pack, the concept may likely be realized in the future installment of the violent epic.

Mortal Kombat 11 is available on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, PC, and Google Stadia.
