Here we can see, “Reset Your Windows Password”
You can reset your computer password by temporarily replacing the Ease of Access executable with the Command Prompt executable outside of Windows, enabling that now-overwritten feature from the Windows login screen to open Command Prompt, and then resetting your account password with the net user command.
While working from a command line is required for this password reset method, it is well beyond the capabilities of everyone reading this.
However, the method varies significantly between Windows versions, owing to how the various Microsoft operating systems provide access to Command Prompt from outside of Windows.
Because of these changes, we’ve produced very extensive password reset tutorials for you to follow, one for each Windows version:
How to Reset a Windows Vista Password
- Restart your computer after inserting the Windows Vista installation DVD into your optical drive. If you need assistance, see How to Boot From a CD, DVD, or BD Disc.
- Wait for the Install Windows screen to appear before moving on to the next step.
- Above the Microsoft copyright notice, select Repair your machine near the bottom of the window.
Please wait while Windows Vista is installed on your machine.
4. Look in the Location column for the drive letter that corresponds to your Windows Vista installation.
The most common drive letter in a Windows Vista installation is C: although it can also be D: Whatever it is, keep it in mind or jot it down.
5. Highlight Windows Vista from the Operating System list, which should only have one entry, and then pick Next. The System Recovery Options window will appear.
6. From the list of recovery tools, select Command Prompt.
7. Type the following two instructions in Command Prompt, in this order, pressing Enter after each line to run them:
copy c:\windows\system32\utilman.exe c:\ copy c:\windows\system32\cmd.exe c:\windows\system32\utilman.exe
After performing the second command, answer Yes to the Overwrite inquiry.
8. Restart the machine after removing the Windows Vista DVD.
9. Wait for Windows to load the Vista login screen before proceeding.
10. Select the small pie-shaped icon in the bottom-left corner of the Windows Vista login screen.
Now that Command Prompt is open, run the net user command as shown below, substituting your username for myuser and newpassword for the password you want to set:
net user myuser newpassword
We could, for example, do something like this:
net user Jon d0nth@km3
11. Close Command Prompt and log in with your newpassword after seeing the “command performed successfully” message.
If you are still unable to gain access, restart your computer and try again.
12. Create a Windows Vista password reset disc now that you’re logged back in. You’ll never have to worry about forgetting your password or hacking your way back in again once you have one of these.
13. Finally, to make this method work, we recommend reverting the changes you made. You are not required to do so, but you will lose access to Vista’s accessibility features at the login screen if you do not. Repeat Steps 1 through 6 precisely as indicated above to undo everything except your password, which will continue to work because you reset it in Step 10.
Execute the following command from Command Prompt, then restart your computer:
copy c:\utilman.exe c:\windows\system32\utilman.exe
14. When prompted to accept the overwriting of utilman.exe, select Yes.
How to Reset a Windows 7 Password
- After inserting either your Windows 7 installation DVD or a Windows 7 System Repair disc into your optical drive, restart your computer. It will also work if you have either on a flash drive.
- Select Next on the screen with your language and keyboard options when your computer boots from the disc or flash drive.
- Choose the option to repair your computer.
- Wait while Windows 7 is being installed on your machine.
- Take note of the drive letter in the Location column once your installation has been discovered. D: is displayed by default in most Windows 7 systems. However, this may not be the case for you.
- Choose Windows 7 from the Operating System drop-down menu, then Next.
- Select Command Prompt from the System Recovery Options menu.
- Execute the following two instructions, in this order, in Command Prompt, pressing Enter after each:
This is the first one:
copy d:\windows\system32\utilman.exe d:\
And then this one:
copy d:\windows\system32\cmd.exe d:\windows\system32\utilman.exe
After performing the second command, answer Yes to the Overwrite inquiry.
9. Restart your computer after removing the disc or flash drive.
You can exit Command Prompt and choose Restart, but it’s also OK to use your computer’s restart button in this circumstance.
10. Select the little icon that looks like a pie with a square around it on the bottom-left of the screen after the Windows 7 login screen opens.
11. Now that Command Prompt is open, type the net user command as follows, replacing my username with your current user name and password with your newpassword:
net user myusername mypassword
So, for example, I’d perform the following:
net user Tim 1lov3blueberrie$
12. The Command Prompt window should now be closed.
13. Please use your newpassword to log in.
14. Make a Password Reset Disk for Windows 7! This is the proactive, Microsoft-approved step you should have taken a long time ago. You’ll never have to worry about forgetting your Windows 7 password again if you have a blank flash drive or floppy disc.
15. It’s probably a good idea to undo the hack that makes this work, even if it’s not required. You won’t be able to use accessibility features from the Windows 7 login screen unless you do so.
Rep Steps 1 through 7 above to undo the modifications you’ve made. Execute the following commands once you’ve regained access to Command Prompt:
copy d:\utilman.exe d:\windows\system32\utilman.exe
After you’ve confirmed, the overwrite, restart your computer.
16. Your password has been reset.

The message is clear. If you entered the command with the correct syntax, the command would complete correctly.

Answer Yes to confirm the overwriting, and then restart your computer.
