Dead By Daylight Incorporates Japanese Ghostly Horror Through a Ringu Crossover

A Dead by Daylight x Ringu crossover has been confirmed by developer Behaviour Interactive for an indeterminate date in March 2022.

Behaviour Interactive has teamed up with Kadokawa, a Japanese entertainment company, on a Ringu crossover for Dead by Daylight, which will be released next spring. In 1998, the cult film Ringu surprised Japanese audiences with its cursed video plot; the core premise crept its way westward with the Gore Verbinski-directed remake The Ring in 2002. Ringu appears to be the perfect fit for Dead by Daylight’s horror icon-laden experience, given the iconic and terror-inducing visuals associated with the brand.

Dead by Daylight is an asymmetric multiplayer game that matches Survivors against a lone Killer. It was released in the summer of 2016. It didn’t take long for Behavior Interactive to strike arrangements with well-known horror brands, allowing its famous online adventure to cross paths with them. For example, Michael Myers from Halloween appeared as a guest star in an October 2016 update. The next year, the likes of Leatherface and Freddy Krueger joined, with Ghost Face from Scream slicing his way through Survivors in 2019. Since then, Dead by Daylight gamers have had the opportunity to play as various genre characters, including Pinhead from Hellraiser, the Demogorgon from Stranger Things, and Nemesis from Resident Evil. More vintage Japanese horror will enter the fray next year.

Ringu will be introduced to the asymmetric multiplayer game in a new Dead by Daylight Chapter slated to arrive in March 2022. Behaviour Interactive emphasized in a press statement that their collaboration with Kadokawa Corporation enables developers to produce material based on Kji Suzuki’s 1991 novel Ring and the original Hideo Nakata-directed film version. Although Game Director Mathieu Côté teased that the “intensely dark and distressing” Chapter will deliver “a truly heart-pounding experience that adds to the already high intensity” of Dead by Daylight, specifics on what the Ringu crossover includes remain under wraps.

Of course, the many Killers in Dead by Daylight are fearsome, but the Ringu crossover could be the terrifying upgrade yet when it debuts next spring. Behaviour Interactive is expected to release more teasers and gameplay videos in the coming months, showcasing the terror that awaits gamers in March.

Dead by Daylight has had a long run of success, having launched on PC in 2016 and then moving to PS4 and Xbox One the following summer. Behaviour Interactive has continued to spread dread through ports for the Nintendo Switch and mobile devices in the years after that. Updates for new-gen consoles, as well as a recent release on the Epic Games Store, ensure that even more people can enjoy the game.

Dead by Daylight’s Ringu crossover content is slated to go live in March 2022 for Nintendo Switch, PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S platforms.
