The year is almost ending, and we’re about to enter a shopping and bargain-hunting season. Most smartphone manufacturers have already announced their plans for 2021, but Motorola appears to be on the verge of doing so. It announced a handful of new phones practically at the eleventh hour, spanning almost all tiers. Depending on certain circumstances, the Moto G200 5G is almost a better deal than the non-Pro Google Pixel 6.
The Moto G100 has muddied the waters a bit with the arrival of Motorola’s “G” series, which has usually been linked with the brand’s mid-range phones. Despite its name, the phone was equipped with largely high-end technology, from the Snapdragon 870 to the 90Hz 6.7-inch screen, at least for early 2021. The Moto G200 5G continues this new trend with stronger specs that make it a true flagship for 2021.
The Snapdragon 888+, Qualcomm’s current leader in premium chipsets, is the embodiment of that identity. Despite the absence of content that will make use of it, the screen has been upgraded to a 144Hz 6.8-inch FHD+ LCD panel, a more interesting feature. Finally, the camera has been upgraded to a 108MP main sensor, joined by an 8MP ultra-wide macro vision camera and a 2MP depth sensor.
However, a few corners have been cut, most likely to meet Motorola‘s target price for the Moto G200 5G. Only one memory combination (8GB RAM/128GB storage) is available, and the front-facing camera has been limited to a single 16MP sensor. It does a little better than the Pixel 6 when it comes to charging, with a 5,000 mAh battery that supports 33W rapid charging.
Of course, a phone’s hardware isn’t everything when it comes to a great user experience, and the Moto G200 5G inevitably lacks some of the Pixel 6’s machine learning features. Motorola does have its own “My UX” Android add-ons, like the oddly-named “Ready For,” which you can use to cast your screen to a TV or Windows PC.
The Moto G200 5G‘s 450 EUR price tag is maybe the most enticing “feature.” However, this means that the phone’s availability will be limited to Europe in the next weeks, with a Latin American release to follow shortly. Motorola hasn’t said whether it aims to expand that to other markets. Still, it promotes its equally premium but more expensive Motorola Edge brand to consumers in other markets, such as the United States.
