A new trailer for the Xbox and Battlefield 2042 alliance depicts future gaming possibilities with sci-fi apocalyptic undertones.
The latest Xbox trailer for its Battlefield 2042 cooperation promotes a dystopian future. In a June press release, the game’s publisher, Electronic Arts, recommended Microsoft’s Xbox Series X/S as the game’s “official consoles.” The latest chapter of the Battlefield video game franchise, however, is not limited to Xbox consoles. In truth, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 versions of the game will be released. The new relationship between EA and Microsoft could imply that Xbox players will have access to special in-game content or improved gaming performance. The new first-person shooter video game is set to debut next month, and Xbox has been teasing fans with a series of videos.
While the original Battlefield 1942 was set during World War II in 2002, the new game is set in 2042, 100 years later. Gamers on current-generation consoles will participate in combat teams of up to 128 players in the game’s three primary gameplay modes (the classic multiplayer All-Out Warfare mode, the cooperative multiplayer Hazard Zone and the customizable Portal mode). Computer-controlled AI will fill in any server gaps, allowing players to engage in a massive number of enemy combats simultaneously. Because the game is set in the future, players will have to traverse a life-threatening climate while surviving the ongoing conflict between the United States and Russia.

The trailer, titled “Imagine the Scenario of Gaming,” envisions a 2042 future in which games are “driven by quantum technology” and “indistinguishable from reality.” A holographic interface with “one quintillion floating-point calculations per second” and a “live thinking AI” allows humans to play. The trailer depicts the inside workings of a rumoured future Xbox controller before concluding with the same future gamer from the previous Battle 2042 trailer. Two disclaimers appear at the bottom of the trailer in small lettering: “What if it could be compatible with smart optical appliances and neural interfaces?” and “What if it could be compatible with gameplay imagined?” The options are limitless.”
Given that Battlefield 2042 is set in a war-torn climatic apocalypse envisioning a gaming future in that setting seems a little crazy. People in such a failing civilization are unlikely to have the resources or leisure to play video games. Fans were quick to point out this anomaly, as well as the fact that the video’s initial title was misspelt as “Image the Future of Gaming” when it was released. The spelling mistake has subsequently been fixed. Furthermore, the idea of a megacorporation like Microsoft having access to neural interfaces (i.e., to some extent, accessing the brains of its players) is a little frightening.
Even though Battlefield 2042 is set amid a climatic crisis, this clip suggests that Xbox has a bright future in gaming. Perhaps this clip foreshadows future events—hopefully only gaming-related ones, not the apocalypse.
On November 19, 2021, Battlefield 2042 will be released for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, Xbox One, and PC.
