Shin Megami Tensei V DLC Will Bring SMT 3 Protagonist Demi-Fiend As a Boss

Return of the True Demon adds Shin Megami Tensei III’s Nocturne’s Demi-fiend as a boss to Shin Megami Tensei V’s launch DLC material.

The DLC for the Nintendo Switch-exclusive game Shin Megami Tensei V will include the return of Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne protagonist Demi-fiend as a boss that the player’s party can fight. Like previous entries in the Persona series parent, the latest demon-collecting turn-based RPG’s gameplay will mostly revolve around its boss battles and the return of one of Shin Megami Tensei’s most popular characters as a boss is an exciting prospect for that reason.

Shin Megami Tensei 3: Nocturne, which was recently remastered for Nintendo Switch ahead of Shin Megami Tensei V’s release for the platform, stars a character with no canonical name (being nameable by the player) who is generally referred to as the Protagonist. He is tasked with changing the path of an apocalyptic planet after being changed into the glowing Demi-fiend. It and previous games are essentially centered around battling Pokémon-like demon negotiation/fusing elements, both of which will return as fixtures of Shin Megami Tensei V’s gameplay on Switch.

At launch, Shin Megami Tensei 3’s Demi-fiend and other characters will return in SMT V’s Return of the True Demon DLC bouts, meaning the Nintendo Switch game will let the previous protagonist and others be fused, according to a Japan-only webcast from the developer and publisher Atlus. This material will be available for purchase when the game is released. Along with other DLC, it will be included in the Shin Megami Tensei V Digital Deluxe Edition, now available for pre-order on the Nintendo eShop for $85. Beating the Demi-boss fiend’s fight will grant players the Demon-Fiend Essence item, and the Return of the True Demon will also bring back famous Shin Megami Tensei 3 bosses such as Matador.

In a Japan-only webcast, developer and publisher Atlus stated that Shin Megami Tensei 3’s Demi-fiend and other characters would reappear in SMT V in Return of the True Demon DLC bouts at launch, implying that the Nintendo Switch game will allow the former protagonist and others to be fused. This content will be available for purchase when the game is released. It will also be included in the Shin Megami Tensei V Digital Deluxe Edition, which can now be pre-ordered on the Nintendo eShop for $85. In addition, beating the Demi-boss fiend’s fight will reward players with an item called Demon-Fiend Essence. The Return of the True Demon will also bring back iconic Shin Megami Tensei 3 monsters like Matador.

The reintroduction of the Demi-fiend as a monster in Shin Megami Tensei V isn’t entirely unexpected, given he was previously fightable in Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga, but his debut is certain to catch the eye of anyone who just played SMT 3: Nocturne HD on PC, Switch, or PS4. The option to battle and merge characters such as the Demi-fiend is a potentially powerful lure for those familiar with the remastered title, but the digital deluxe edition’s additional $25 price tag may not be as appealing to all save the most loving and familiar with the franchise.

The Return of the True Demon content would be especially amazing if it resurrected the voice of SMT 3’s Demi-fiend, as Shin Megami Tensei V’s voice cast has already wowed by obtaining top talent from popular games and anime such as Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Dragon Ball Z. It’s unclear how many goods will be rejected in the main game, but there look to be plenty more demons to battle and fuse in Shin Megami Tensei V’s DLC material.

Shin Megami Tensei V will be released on November 11, 2021, on the Nintendo Switch.
