Samsung foldable displays will have 120Hz refresh rates

Although Samsung seems to possess the lion’s share of the niche foldable phone market, it’d not be the only noteworthy game in town soon. A few of the latest foldable devices are rumored to be launching within the subsequent 12 months, but, ironically and unsurprisingly, Samsung will also enjoy those indirectly. Its display board business will provide foldable screens for these phones, and people’s screens might even boast fast refresh rates usually seen on rooted phones.

It’s challenging to form foldable screens, and it’s even harder to urge them right. Additionally, manufacturers will eventually want to feature standard or modern features in today’s displays to create them more durable, especially if you think about a stylus. For smartphones, that has boiled right down to fast refresh rates of 90Hz or higher.

According to display supply chain consultant Ross Young, that’s precisely what Samsung Display will bring back to the table this year. Its foldable panel will utilize LTPO or low-temperature polycrystalline oxide for its foldable panels, enabling those to support variable refresh rates and better power efficiency. Specifically, Young says that the foldable screens are going to be ready to reach 120Hz speeds.

These panels will be those used for the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3, but it doesn’t stop there. The tipster says that each foldable phone this year, and maybe early this year, will be using an equivalent 120Hz LTPO panel, including those from OPPO, Vivo, Xiaomi, and, of course, Google.

This bodes well for the nascent foldable smartphone market that has also got to catch up with regular phones in mass appeal. But, of course, the rationale for that, reasonably practical considerations, is the price that these expensive phones carry. More players within the market hopefully mean more competitive prices, bringing a number of those right down to cheaper levels.
