1. Pro Tools 11.3.1 and Windows 10
I’ve got a Lenovo laptop, 16 gig RAM running Windows 10 that gets used for general computer stuff a family would do. I had another computer admittedly antiquated with four RAM gigs that I used with my PT rig, 11.3.1. Well, the old computer, the 2008 version, decide it had been time to retire, so my question is, will a laptop running Windows 10 be compatible with Pro Tools 11.3.1? Thanks, Richard
2. Protools 11 problems with Windows 10?
Hey everyone, new member here. I have recently upgraded my PC’s hardware, and I’m using Windows 10 and PT 11. After replacing my HDD, I visited reinstall ProTools from the first disks I even have, and also from the DL link from the Avid website, when that didn’t work. Both seem to possess an equivalent result. As soon because the “Restart for installation to complete” window comes up, once I click thereon, Windows never comes up and tells me there’s a mistake, and I’m stuck not even having the ability else my PC copy. I even have to revive from a previous backup whenever before I started the installation. Is there an incompatibility that I don’t know about?
3. Warning to Windows 10 users installing Pro Tools 11
I have a PT 11 license from my college days that I have been using in tandem with my old iLok over the years. I’ve had to put it on several Windows machines but just saw a serious issue installing it on my new desktop. Many threads I looked into stated that they’d had to try to to a fresh Windows install. That should not be necessary.
The PT installer will automatically install an old version of the iLok license manager. This creates a TPkd.sys file in your “C:/Windows/System32/drivers/” folder. Once you reboot, it’ll offer you a BSOD and stop you from a successful boot.
For future readers who might be got to start their computer for whatever reason:
Boot in safe mode by holding the WIN key during the initial startup
Click “Troubleshoot>Advanced Options>Command Prompt” and log in together with your username/password.
manually delete the TPkd.sys file with: del “C:\Windows\System32\drivers\TPkd.sys”
(carefully – don’t accidentally delete the other drivers)
Reboot your PC, and it should boot up normally to your check-in screen.
Ok, now I’ll vent for a sec (you can stop reading here):
WTF??! this is often basically malware. I do know Pro Tools isn’t meant for Windows but come on, if you’re going to support it in the least, the smallest amount you’ll do isn’t break Windows as soon as it’s installed. I’m just amazed by iLok. I’ve never seen software with such a crucial use case have such horrible and hacky support. Their site and documentation is pathetic. I love it was made in 2002 and thought, “great! let’s never update this.”
