OnePlus has followed the OnePlus Nord with a new midrange humdinger.
OnePlus has announced that the OnePlus Nord 2 5G will be released soon. This mid-range smartphone features many of the same characteristics as a flagship handset.
The success of the original Nord was a testament to its potential, so what could the Nord 2 offer? Let’s see.
OnePlus Reveals Its Nord 2 Handset
If you are looking for a budget-friendly smartphone that can be used for work, you might want to wait for the OnePlus Nord 2 to drop. It is the successor to 2020’s excellent Nord.
OnePlus has not yet revealed the release date or price of the Nord 2 5G. These details are being kept secret by OnePlus. However, we do know the power source of Nord 2…
OnePlus Partners With MediaTek to Power Nord 2
The inclusion of a MediaTek SOC within the handset’s core may surprise OnePlus fans (and the original Nord). OnePlus phones that were made in the past had a Qualcomm SOC, which many considered the stronger of both the two. The MediaTek chip will mark the brand’s first-ever.
Susie Liu (Head of Strategic Planning at OnePlus Nord) posted this in OnePlus.com’s forum:
You may have heard that the OnePlus Nord 2 5G will feature a premium MediaTek chipset. Last year we grew our OnePlus family by adding the OnePlus Nord line to our mid-range category. This was our most significant step in many years. It confirmed our commitment to sharing our great technology with the rest of the world and made our Fast and Smooth experience even more accessible.
MediaTek’s Dimensity 1200 is the chip. This chip powers a new generation of 5G smartphones that feature best-in-class AI and camera technology. It also offers incredible multimedia experiences that will impress.
Liu continues to say:
The MediaTek Dimensity 1200 processor is powerful… The MediaTek Dimensity 1200 is a powerful processor. We collaborated with the MediaTek team to bring you AI-based features that enhance the user experience across multiple touchpoints.
Here’s some non-committal talk by Nord’s Strategic Planning head. Then, let’s get to the source and find out what MediaTek offers with its chip. Warning: This article may contain bias…
- Octa-core CPU with 1 x Ultra Core (up to 3 GHz), 3 Super Cores (up to 2.6 GHz), 4 x Efficiency Cores (1 up to 2 GHz).
- Features-filled 5G modem
- MediaTek Imagiq HDR Camera with a 40% Improved Dynamic Range, capable of taking photos up to 200MP
- MediaTek HyperEngine 3.0 gaming technology, which brings ray tracing to mobile games
- Refreshing display at 168Hz
MediaTek’s Dimensity1200 page provides more information about the specifications.
Is MediaTek a Smart Move for OnePlus?
This makes sense considering that OnePlus is now semi-synonymous to OPPO, which has used MediaTek cores for its handsets.
We will continue to wait to see if it is a smart move. It will be interesting to see if the MediaTek SOC shift will prove beneficial. It may still be a wise decision, considering MediaTek sold more chips in 2020 than Qualcomm.
