Given that the firm was nearly at the pinnacle of its success last year, OnePlus’ co-founder’s abrupt loss seemed almost unfathomable. On the other hand, Carl Pei departed OnePlus on good terms, at least publicly, to start his hardware firm, amusingly dubbed “Nothing.” Nothing was widely expected to release its phone, but this has yet to happen. That doesn’t rule out the possibility that the Nothing Phone may become something by 2022.
Although it was expected that Pei’s company would create smartphones in the future, there was no guarantee of when this would happen. Nothing was shrouded in secrecy from the start, so it was anyone’s guess what the company’s first product would be. When Nothing introduced the Ear (1) last July, it finally rested the rumours, paving the way for a new product.
Nothing in recent months may have been establishing the groundwork for that new product. It bought Essential, the equally oddly-named startup founded by Android founder Andy Rubin, earlier this year. The Essential Phone was its sole portfolio, which means Nothing has all it needs to produce its phone.
Nothing will release its first-ever smartphone in 2022, according to an exclusive report from 91mobiles. Unfortunately, no more information was provided, but a simple design should be expected given the company’s philosophy. It’s still unclear whether it’ll come with a transparent case like the Nothing Ear (1).
Since the business recently teamed with Qualcomm, the Nothing Phone (1) might be powered by a Snapdragon chipset if that is its name. A Nothing Power (1) power bank is also mentioned in the report, which might bridge the gap between the earphones and next year’s Nothing phone.
