Password managers are many these days, but some have fallen out of favour due to one or more business-related changes. Some password managers are also confined to establishing and storing passwords, as its name implies. However, many users want to store and retrieve more than just passwords, and Microsoft’s new Autofill service aims to meet that requirement across all platforms, including mobile and desktop.
Many security experts highly advise individuals to utilise password managers because humans are awful at inventing and remembering strong passwords. On the other hand, Passwords aren’t the only thing individuals have to type into online pages or apps that demand accuracy and security. Some things are better left to better at remembering and retrieving data, like our computers, phones, and the software that runs on them, from credit card information to email addresses.
That’s where Microsoft Autofill, an add-on to its Authenticator app and service, comes in. When it comes to storing data you submit in forms and automatically filling them out when needed, it does what other browsers do. This feature is already available in Microsoft Edge, but it is now being rolled out to other platforms and devices.
Microsoft Autofill on mobile is only available as part of Microsoft Authenticator, so you’ll need to install the latter first. On Android or iOS, you must also make Authenticator, the default autofill provider. When you visit a website or app that wants you to input information such as a billing address, credit card information, or login credentials, a single tap will automatically fill in all of the information you’ve previously saved.
If you’re using Google’s browser on a desktop, you’ll need the Microsoft Autofill plugin for Chrome. Through the user’s Microsoft account, data is synced across all devices. That private information will be encrypted, and payment information will need biometric authentication on mobile devices. That kind of bio gesture need for Chrome was not mentioned by Microsoft.
