Far Cry 7 Will Be More Online Multiplayer-Focused, Rumor Claims

According to Axios sources, publisher Ubisoft plans to develop Far Cry 7 with a more online-focused focus in mind.

According to reports, the yet-to-be-announced Far Cry 7 will place a greater emphasis on multiplayer than its predecessors. In the past, Ubisoft’s first-person open-world franchise has had its fair share of online features. Both Far Cry 4 and Far Cry 5 featured co-op gameplay, though the multiplayer components came with their own set of restrictions. For example, the co-op in the fourth mainline entry was limited to side missions; Far Cry 5 didn’t allow players to transfer progress from their own game to their partner’s.

However, Ubisoft’s interest in online play has grown significantly over time, with the publisher recently confirming plans to increase its investment in live services. The publisher morphed the live service model for the last two Assassin’s Creed titles, Odyssey and Valhalla, into one befitting post-launch support for single-player games. Infinity, the next major AC entry, will go even further into the service-oriented business. Given reports that Far Cry will take a drastically different direction after the sixth mainline installment, it’s no surprise that Ubisoft is looking to expand its online offerings.

According to an unnamed Axios source (via VGC), the next Far Cry game may place a strong emphasis on online functionality. This news comes on the heels of hints that Ubisoft is working on a multiplayer-focused Far Cry game. The ostensible tease was revealed via QR codes found in Far Cry 6, which lead to a six-second video. According to YouTuber JorRaptor, the clip’s imagery either hints at an unannounced multiplayer mode or an online game. Ubisoft has remained silent on the subject so far.

As previously stated, this isn’t the first time rumors have circulated that Ubisoft will take a different approach to the Far Cry universe next time around. According to the report, Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier stated in Episode 58 of the Triple Click podcast that a “radically different direction” will lead to a post-Far Cry 6 endeavor.

Considering the long-running series’ history, a multiplayer game does not necessarily imply that single-player will be left out. For example, far Cry Primal and New Dawn have both served as interstitial spinoff adventures in the last five years. Reason suggests that the ostensibly online-focused game could play a similar role in Ubisoft’s content releases.

Far Cry 7 has yet to be officially announced by Ubisoft.
