Creating a Windows Recovery USB

Here we can see “Creating a Windows Recovery USB”

This page explains creating a bootable rescue USB stick that contains the Windows Vista/7/8 setup files or a repair environment.

EasyBCD and EasyRE (our Windows Recovery CDs) are the two most popular products.

This step-by-step tutorial will show you how to use EasyBCD to generate a bootable Windows Recovery USB to replace a bootable CD or DVD.

You can even use these instructions to make a multi-purpose “swiss-army USB” by putting multiple images on the USB disk and choosing which one to boot from when you turn on your computer!

Requirements

Before you begin this guide, make sure you have the following items on hand:

  1. A copy of EasyBCD and a USB stick or USB drive with at least 500 MiB of space.
  2. The Windows XP/Vista/7 repair CD as an ISO image.

Getting EasyBCD is a simple process

EasyBCD is available for download. You’ll need to purchase an EasyBCD license if you’re using it at work or for business purposes.

Obtaining the ISO image of the Windows XP/Vista/7 Recovery CD

You’ll need the ISO image from http://systemdiscs.com/ that you purchased for download. If you purchased the disc online, go to your order page (check your email!) and download the ISO image – make sure to save it to disk (rather than running) if/when prompted!

How to Get Started

Step 1: Insert your USB flash disk

Before installing and using EasyBCD, make sure your USB drive is inserted or connected to the computer!

Step 2: Download and install EasyBCD

You’ll need to run the setup file you downloaded earlier if you already have EasyBCD installed. All you have to do now is click “next” on all of the prompts, and you’ll be good to go.

Step 3: Open EasyBCD and run it

Expand the “EasyBCD” folder, and click the EasyBCD entry from the start menu. Alternatively, go to the start menu and type in EasyBCD.

Transfer the ISO image to the USB drive.

Step 1: Save the ISO image to your USB drive

At this point, you must copy the ISO image to the USB drive that you made or get from SystemDiscs.com. Find the file in My Computer or My Documents, then copy and paste it to the USB device (do not put it in a folder! ):

Step 2: Rename the ISO image

You’re nearly finished adding the new entry to EasyBCD. EasyBCD won’t load an ISO image with spaces in the name, so rename it to “Windows 7 Recovery Disc” or “Windows 7 Recovery Disc.iso” instead of “EasyRE for Windows 7” or “EasyRE for Windows 7.iso.”

Use EasyBCD to create a bootable USB

Step 1: Go to BCD Deployment

After EasyBCD has launched, click the “BCD Deployment” option in the EasyBCD Toolbox sidebar.

Step 2: From the drop-down option, choose your partition

Select “Partition: ” from the drop-down box in the top half of the screen. and choose the entry that corresponds to your USB drive.

Step 3: Copy BCD to a USB drive

Now you must instruct EasyBCD to install the bootloader on the USB drive, allowing you to boot from it. To begin, click the “Install BCD” button and wait for the BCD installation to complete.

Step 4: Allow EasyBCD to load USB bootloader

EasyBCD will ask you if you wish to load the freshly constructed BCD from the USB drive (in a friendly manner). When you encounter this dialog, make sure you press yes:

Step 5: Select ISO | Add New Entry

In the EasyBCD Toolbox sidebar, click the “Add New Entry” button, then the ISO tab in the bottom half of the screen (it’s the one with the CD on fire icon):

Step 6: Modify the name and type of the file

Change the Name textbox in the ISO tab to something more relevant, like “Windows 7 Recovery CD,” and ensure the type is selected to “Run from Disk”:

Step 7: Locate and open the ISO image

To launch a browse file dialog, click the three-dot symbol of the folder. Find the ISO image you copied to the USB drive using this method.

Step 8: Insert the ISO code

You’re ready to add the entry after selecting the ISO image from the USB! Click the green plus sign next to the “Add Entry” button, then wait for it to do its task.

Step 9: Shut down EasyBCD

Close EasyBCD from the file menu if you want to. Make sure the USB isn’t removed until EasyBCD has finished!

Step 10: Disconnect the USB cable

Remove the USB drive from your computer carefully now, and pat yourself on the back. The Windows Vista/7 Recovery CD can now be booted from your USB stick!

Recover your computer!

You can now take this USB to another computer (the one that needs assistance) and boot from it. Step 2: To repair your computer, follow our instructions for using the recovery CD.

(Optional!) Rinse and repeat.

If you want to add more than one recovery CD ISO image to your USB drive, repeat the procedures above, beginning with copying the ISO and finishing with closing EasyBCD.
