Since the early days of mobile phones, smartphone cameras have gone a long way, but squeezing them into such small devices has always been a design and engineering issue. Modern camera bumps are unattractive, pushing phone manufacturers to devise novel techniques to conceal or minimize their presence. Xiaomi, on the other hand, maybe heading in the opposite direction with its upcoming Xiaomi 12 Ultra. The device’s design is supposedly showcased in newly public renders, including a camera bump that takes things to the next level.
It’s unclear whether this latest design leak improves previous speculations that suggested the Xiaomi 12 Ultra would have a second screen on the rear. The most recent leak abandons the promise of a second screen favouring an excessively huge circular camera bump akin to the one found on the Nokia Lumia 1020 PureView — though, arguably, it’s worse.
RODENT950 provided the massive Xiaomi 12 Ultra design leak, later reproduced by LetsGoDigital. Xiaomi’s next flagship phone will have a huge circular camera bump smack in the middle of the rear panel. However, it will be on top of a more inconspicuous raised rectangle. This may offer some aesthetic gradation, but it also thickens the phone.

The sloppy sensor cuts are worse; however, keep in mind that this is only a render of a leak, not the official design. The shapes suggest the phone will include at least four cameras and a variety of other sensors, including 3D Time-of-Flight (ToF) and, maybe, a colour temperature sensor, assuming the leak is accurate. It’ll undoubtedly be a shambles, but ideally, one that won’t be too visible from afar.
In comparison, the Xiaomi 12 Ultra’s front is less impressive. The smartphone is expected to have a 6.8-inch curved AMOLED display and a single punch-hole camera in the centre of the device’s forehead. Meanwhile, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor is believed to be used under the hood, with up to 12GB of RAM depending on the configuration.
The Xiaomi 12 Ultra takes a unique approach to the placement of the cameras on its back, but it’s also one that borders on the exaggerated, if not outright ridiculous. When the Xiaomi 12 series (presumably) comes later this month, we’ll have to see how the camera design affects usability and ergonomics in person.
