Ed Boon, co-creator of Mortal Kombat, delivers one of the franchise’s most iconic phrases, making an indelible stamp on video game history.
Ed Boon, the co-creator, recently revealed the roots of Mortal Kombat’s most memorable voice line. The tough fighting game franchise debuted in 1992, and it has remained one of the most popular editions in the fighting game category ever since. Ed Boon, the series’ co-creator, is active on social media, connecting with fans and voicing ideas such as his wish for a PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale sequel.
Since its conception, Ed Boon has been a part of the Mortal Kombat brand, having worked on the original 1992 game as a designer and programmer. Boon is acknowledged as a co-creator of the game, alongside artist John Tobias, and continues to work as the director of its most recent instalments, such as Mortal Kombat X in 2015 and Mortal Kombat 11 in 2019. Boon and Tobias have left an indelible impact on the series; the dark ninja fighter Noob Saibot, for example, combines both of their last names spelt backwards. Boon has also known for sharing behind-the-scenes details about the show on social media, including rumours of Buffy the Vampire Slayer guest appearances that never materialised.
I had done voice work for about 10-15 pinball machine games over the years, so when it came time to add vocals to MK, (as a default) we used my voice for a number of our fighters including Scorpion’s COME HERE! and GET OVER HERE! screams. (2/6)

For Mortal Kombat 2’s (Shao Kahn) announcer we used the (infinitely better) voice of pinball designer Steve Ritchie who (coincidentally) was the guy who originally suggested we call the game MORTAL KOMBAT. (4/6)

Ed Boon, the franchise’s current director, has taken Mortal Kombat into the modern-day while maintaining the franchise’s legacy as a fighting game behemoth. Mortal Kombat 11 was released in 2019. However, the game’s post-launch support terminated in July 2021. However, speculations say that NetherRealm Studios is already working on Mortal Kombat 12. While the developer also works on the Injustice fighting game genre based on DC Comics, some speculate that the company may jump immediately into the next round of Mortal Kombat.
Along with Fatalities and its diverse collection of playable characters, Scorpion’s “Get over here!” voice line is one of the most memorable features of the Mortal Kombat franchise. Ed Boon has secured an indelible place in the series’ success and history by giving the voice for this ferocious battle cry. Even though his performance was limited by money, it has become a beloved Mortal Kombat classic.
