The PS5 does not sit on the shelves of both distribution stores and chains to get quite long. Since its launch in November 2020you could call yourself lucky if you figure out how to discover and purchase one at retail cost.
The console is particularly sought-after in the united states, according to newly-released data.
The Popularity of the PS5 Continues to Soar
In news that will probably shock quite a couple of the PlayStation 5 has become the fastest-selling gaming system in US history–even if it has only been in the marketplace for five months.
That is about both life unit and dollar sales, states Mat Piscatella, Executive Director, Games in retail analyst company The NPD Group. He didn’t give specific sales figures, but then again, neither gets Sony (view the organization’s February earnings report [PDF]).
US NPD HW – PlayStation 5 is the fastest selling console in U.S. history in both unit and dollar sales (lifetime sales with five months on the market).

The PS5 DualSense control has been the top accessory in dollar earnings for March and the first quarter of 2021.
In case you don’t already have a PS5 but are distressed to catch one, you have probably seen firsthand how fast the console moves from stock. Sony marketed 4.5 million PS5 units in 2020, and there’s still an overwhelming customer demand for this.
It’s easy to blame this issue on scalpers. However, they are not the sole reason you can’t find a PS5.
Other Highlights of The NPD Group Video Game Market Data
Piscatella’s extended Twitter thread did not concentrate entirely on the PS5, however. He also discussed the company’s information on US consumer spending about the entire video game market in March 2021.
From the first quarter of 2021, Americans spent $14.9 billion on gambling hardware, material, and attachments. That is 30 percent greater than 2020’s initial quarter.
This month’s video game hardware revenue has been 47 percent greater than this year ago, in a March set of 680 million. Piscatella says the prior large as a point of reference: $552 million, that was put in March 2008.
He gave a listing of the top 20 selling games of March 2021 and all platforms (in addition to the top ten listings for every significant console). The best ten, rated on dollar revenue, are as follows:
- Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War
- Dragon Hunter: Boost
- Outriders
- Super Mario 3D World
- Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales
- Mario Kart 8
- Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla
- Animal Crossing: New Horizons
- Super Mario 3D All-Stars
- Minecraft
The PS5 Is Yet Another Case of Demand Exceeding Supply
The PS5 has imposed gamers worldwide with FOMO and even the fear of falling out because not everybody who needs a device can get their hands on one. NVIDIA has a similar issue with its cards.
Hopefully, that will change because Sony chief fiscal officer Hiroki Totoki maintained in February that the company was still on course to sell more than 7.6 million units complete… but we should not hold their breath. It does not seem as the hype because the PS5 will not be dying anytime soon.
