Huawei V-Pencil patent hints at a killer Mate V foldable feature

Foldables are back in style, thanks to Samsung’s more aggressive marketing of its third-generation devices. While the Galaxy Z Fold 3 has the most features and is the subject of the most debate, the Galaxy Z Flip 3 is portrayed as the more quiet success of the two. However, Samsung’s competitors may be taking notice and upping their game due to the foldable clamshell’s low price. Huawei, in particular, may have a ruse up its sleeve to entice people to buy its rumoured Mate V clamshell.

Huawei already has a foldable phone, the Mate X, which debuted around the same time as the first Galaxy Fold. However, unlike Samsung’s design, which has stuck to the “innie” fold from the start, Huawei’s first Mate X had an outward folding display before switching to an inward fold in the Mate X2. Huawei hasn’t released any other foldable devices outside of the Mate X series, but that could change soon.

Last year, Mate V foldable rumours surfaced, implying that Huawei will compete with the Galaxy Z Flip and the new Motorola Razr. Those were, of course, just rumours and speculation based on trademark filings, and nothing came of them. But, on the other hand, a new trademark suggests that the company isn’t giving up just yet.

According to LetsGoDigital, Huawei’s recently trademarked V-Pencil is intended for the Mate V foldable phone. Although the trademark refers to an electronic pen or stylus, Huawei already offers an M-Pen or M-Pencil for its tablets. This new trademark suggests that Huawei intends to use the brand for something entirely different, possibly the upcoming Mate V device.

If Huawei successfully launches a foldable clamshell with stylus support, it may have a winner on its hands. There have been a lot of requests for S Pen support on the Galaxy Z Flip 3, so Huawei might be able to find a market for it. But, of course, Huawei’s issue could be software-related, at least for those unfamiliar with the company’s HarmonyOS.
