Windows XP on Mac?

Windows XP on Mac?

Here we can see, “Windows XP on Mac?”

The Challenges

  • Macintosh uses a different MBR.
  • EFI is used by MacBooks, while XP x86 uses BIOS.
  • The Darwin Bootloader has been adapted to work with EFI-enabled operating systems.

OK… So, one step at a time. Where does the BIOS come into play? For what purpose? How? The BIOS receives low-level calls from the OS that inform it how to handle the hardware. Now, I don’t have access to the Windows XP source code, so all I can say for sure is that NTLDR uses it to access the drive when Windows initially boots up and that Windows uses it at least once more when mounting the drives.

Required Programs and Materials

  • Bootable CD for Acronis Disk Director
  • True Image by Acronis
  • Another machine with a fresh Windows XP installation. There are no applications installed.
  • Obviously, a MacBook!
  • A DVD of Windows Vista (not for installation!)
  • Boot files for Windows Vista
  • bcdedit.exe
  • BCDedit allows you to restore a file.

The majority of the issues can be solved theoretically soon.

  1. Shrink the Mac partition on the MacBook using the Bootable Acronis Disk Director CD. In the remaining space, create a new NTFS/HPFS partition.
  2. Install a fresh copy of Windows XP on a computer.
  3. Extract Boot.7z to your XP installation’s root drive. So you’ve got C: Boot.
  4. Copy bcdedit.exe to your XP installation’s root drive. C:\BCDedit.exe
  5. Copy MacBook.bcd to your XP installation’s root drive.
  6. To “reseal” your XP installation and erase any hardware information from the setup, use sysprep.
  7. Make an image of your XP installation with Acronis TrueImage CD.
  8. Recreate the image on the partition you just created on your MacBook using the bootable Acronis True Image CD.
  9. To boot the MacBook, use the Bootable Vista DVD.
  10. Choose “Repair Startup” -> “Next” -> “CMD” -> “Run as well.”
  11. Navigate to the C: Boot drive (the partition you created on the MacBook and then extract the Acronis TrueImage file). (C:boot) (cd C:boot) (cd C:boot) (cd C
  12. Remove the quotations from “fixntfs.exe -lh.”
  13. Return to the C:\drive (cd \)
  14. Remove the quotes from “bcdedit.exe /import MacBook.bcd.”
  15. Restart after ejecting the CD.
  16. Hack the Darwin Bootloader on a Mac now to create a new entry that chainloads Drive(0) Partition (2). I’m not sure if Darwin is the same, but this is a fairly straightforward process that has nothing to do with EFI. It will look like this if you use GRUB.

17. You should be chainloaded to the Vista bootloader by selecting “Windows XP” on the Darwin Bootloader.

18. If all goes smoothly, XP will startup!!
