Magic Leap 2 AR headset revealed: Dimming, larger FOV, smaller size

The next-generation augmented reality glasses from Magic Leap have been unveiled. According to company CEO Peggy Johnson, who recently spoke with CNBC about the latest AR headset, Magic Leap 2 will be “general availability” in 2022. In addition, magic Leap 2 will be the “smallest and lightest device” in the enterprise market, according to Johnson.

The Magic Leap 2 is an augmented reality headset that overlays information on the natural world like its pricey and bulky predecessor. However, with Magic Leap 2, Johnson clarifies that the company is focusing on enterprise applications, describing how large corporations have already used the company’s technology for things like employee training.

As you might expect, the second-generation Magic Leap is more advanced than the first. According to Johnson, the Magic Leap 2 provides “significantly” more comfort and immersion than the previous model, as well as a “significantly” lighter, smaller form factor. Magic Leap 2 also features dimming for use in bright environments, as well as “the industry’s largest field of view,” according to Johnson.

According to Johnson, the company’s goal is to meet a critical enterprise need: the ability to wear an AR headset all day without discomfort. Johnson revealed that Magic Leap has dozens of partners in various industries, including defence, healthcare, technology, and manufacturing, and that “incredible innovation” is still required when it comes to integrating augmented reality with the real world.

Peggy Johnson, the CEO of Magic Leap, went on to say:

I believe that, just as I had a front-row seat to the rise of mobile early in my career, AR will drive the next wave of digital transformation. This isn’t to say that the transition will be simple; it will be difficult. To overcome the numerous challenges of fusing the physical and digital worlds into one, AR will still require incredible innovation.

However, Magic Leap excels in this area. We’re pioneers in a field ripe with opportunity, and I’m so proud of our team’s never-ending creativity and ingenuity.
