Xiaomi has long experimented with products outside of its core mobile business, and it appears that its competitors are doing the same. Realme seems to be attempting to make a mark in as many markets as possible, from tablets to laptops and, soon, televisions. Unlike OnePlus, it will not be producing its TV, instead of releasing an HDMI stick that will run Google TV next week.
It will run Google TV rather than Android TV is not a minor point to overlook. While Android TV has been around for a while, Google TV is poised to revitalize the platform in its unique way. Google TV is to Android TV what the Pixel experience is to Android smartphones in some ways.
In more practical terms, Google TV introduces a new and more streamlined interface for accessing video content, gathering and organizing various sources into categories that smart TV users are familiar with. There are currently only a few smart TVs that support Google TV and one dongle, the Google Chromecast with Google TV. Realme will be the first-ever competitor to Google’s first-party product when it launches its stick.
The design of Realme’s 4K Smart TV Stick is very simple, and it doesn’t appear to have any additional features. It supports 4Kp60 content as well as HDR10+ output and connects via HDMI 2.1. Unlike most HDMI dongles, this one seems to be powered via USB-C rather than the older micro-USB port.
On October 13, the Realme 4K Smart Google TV Stick will be unveiled. The only thing worth waiting for is the price, which has already been revealed in most details. Unfortunately, there isn’t much information available, but it’s likely less expensive than Google’s $50 Chromecast with Google TV, especially if it doesn’t include a remote.
