Apple Inc. will probably scale back the dimensions of the Face ID scanner sensor by 50 percent for iPhone 2021.

Several rumors and reports suggest Apple’s Face ID sensor array could get smaller in size, Apple Insider reported on Friday.

If the sensors are often hidden behind the display or reduced in size, then the notch itself will get smaller, too, the report said.

A Digitimes report claims that Apple could cut the die size for its vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) chips for 3D Face ID scanning by up to 50 percent.

This would be utilized in “new iPhone and iPad devices to be unrolled later in 2021”, consistent with the report.

VCSEL may be a sensor wont to spray infrared dots over a surface to determine a 3D depth map.

The report suggests Apple is reducing the dimensions of the chip utilized in Face ID only, but an equivalent sort of chip is employed for LiDAR on the rear of iPhones and iPads.
