Spotify's new lyrics feature is now available on both mobile and desktop platforms

Spotify Lyrics was made available to all users this week on both desktop and mobile devices. Although the Spotify lyrics system does not provide words for every song on the site, once your Spotify client’s Lyrics system is activated, “many of your favourite music” will surface with lyrics in real-time. This system adds new lyrics “every day,” thus, a somewhat well-known musician might not have lyrics in the system today, but might tomorrow – you’ll have to keep checking.

If you’re using a smartphone or tablet, the most recent version of the Spotify app is required to begin this process. If you’re on a smartphone, tap the “now playing” bar at the bottom of the screen or the album artwork in the side menu if you’re on a tablet.

Lyrics will appear in a different location and format depending on your app and the music you’re listening to. If you’re listening to a song from an album with primarily blue cover art, you’ll probably notice a light blue panel with “Lyrics” on it. In contrast, a multicoloured album cover with mostly cool hues might have a darker olive green Lyrics panel.

It would help if you viewed lyrics for your chosen song by pulling up on this panel or tapping it. You should also be able to extend the lyrics to fill the entire screen. In the bottom-right corner of your screen, there should be a “square with up arrow” icon or a “three dots connected with two lines” icon once you’ve viewed lyrics in full-screen mode. Highlight your favourite lyrics, and then hit this button to share them on your preferred social media platform.

The social sharing option may not be available to all users at launch. For example, if you have an Android 12 handset, you should see the lyrics, but the share icon may not be present at the launch. If you don’t see an icon in the lower right-hand corner of your full-screen lyrics, restart your device and try again – or make sure you’re using the most recent version of the app.
