What Is Internet NAT Redirection?
All computers and devices connected to the web have an online Protocol address. This IP address identifies each connection to direct traffic to the right destination. When a user connects multiple Internet devices over equivalent Internet service, a conflict in IP addresses would normally prevent proper signal direction. To alleviate this problem, routers use Network Address Translation to properly send and receive data.
Local IP Addresses
When computers connect through a router, the router assigns all an area IP address. Unlike global IP addresses, these local addresses only exist within the Local Area Network. Local computers can contact one another through them, and therefore the router uses them to spot each separately. Meanwhile, the router connects to the web with an Internet-wide IP address, allowing it to browse online and get in touch with other computers on the web.
When a computer on an area network requests data from the web, the request first enters the router. The router identifies which local computer requests the info, then sends out the request over the web. The remote server sending the info only knows the router’s IP address, then returns the requested data packets to the router. When the router receives them, it uses NAT to match the info to the outgoing request and translates the destination address from its IP to the local IP of the right computer.
A hardware firewall intercepts all incoming data from the web, filtering out hacking attempts. While a router doesn’t have this level of filtering, it does effectively double as an easy firewall, thanks to NAT. When a sign reaches the router, it’s to decide which local computer to pass it to. If it doesn’t recognize that signal as requested by any local computer, it dismisses it. This blocks most straightforward threats, though it isn’t adequate for corporate servers with sensitive data.
Because of the firewall effect during NAT, some legitimate packets get dismissed also. For example, certain Internet applications, like many games and peer-to-peer sharing services, believe remote data sent without an immediate request. Normally, routers ignore this data, not knowing where to send it. However, users can work around this by fixing port forwarding in their routers’ settings. Port forwarding directs the router to send all data coming over specified Internet ports to particular computers, albeit that data wasn’t locally requested.

Can you inform me if we should always have this feature turned on?
It is turned off by default.

computers – or is that this option designed to stop outsiders from

This new firmware has an option (enable/disable) for ‘Filter Internet NAT Redirection’.
