Facebook AI software able to dig up origins of deepfake images

Facebook scientists Wednesday said they designed artificial intelligence applications to not just spot “deepfake” pictures but to determine where they came out.

Deepfakes are photographs, videos, or sound clips changed having artificial intelligence to seem accurate, which specialists have cautioned can mislead or become untrue.

Facebook study workers Tal Hassner and Xi Yin stated their staff worked together with Michigan State University to make applications that reverse engineers deepfake pictures to determine how they had been created and where they originated.

“Our strategy will ease deepfake tracing and detection in real-world configurations, in which the deepfake picture itself is frequently the sole information detectors need to use,” the scientists said in a blog article.

“This job provides professionals and researchers tools to investigate incidents of coordinated disinformation with deepfakes, in addition to open new directions for future study,” they added.

Facebook’s new applications run deepfakes via a system to look for imperfections left throughout the production procedure, that the scientist’s state change an image’s electronic “fingerprint.”

“In digital pictures, fingerprints have been utilized to recognize the electronic camera used to take a picture,” the scientists stated.

“Much like apparatus fingerprints, picture fingerprints are unique patterns left images… that may equally be employed to spot the generative model the picture came out.”

“Our study pushes the bounds of comprehension from deepfake detection,” they stated.

Microsoft late last year introduced software that may help spot deepfake videos or photos, adding to an arsenal of programs developed to combat the hard-to-detect images before the US presidential elections.

The organization’s Video Authenticator software examines a picture or every frame of a movie, searching for signs of manipulation which could be undetectable to the bare eye.
