Battlefield 2042's New Specialists Include Hacker & Riot Shield Class

DICE has revealed five new specializations for Battlefield 2042, including wingsuits, hacking, and riot shields.

DICE has revealed the five remaining Battlefield 2042 specialists, whose powers and equipment include hacking, a riot shield, and more. Class equipment in the Battlefield series has historically been limited to standard military-themed items such as C4 explosives, ammo boxes, and medkits for healing teammates. Battlefield 2042 will retain those old tools while adding new specialized gadgets, eliminating classes, and making individual loadouts more flexible than recent editions.

Player-controlled Battlefield 2042 specialists will alter the franchise formula by shifting the emphasis from having players perform various support roles using class-specific items such as repair torches and defibrillators. Instead, each expert has a distinct operator (who does not change appearance depending on which country they are assigned to in a match) with customizable cosmetics, gadgets, and bonuses. The Battlefield 2042 open beta gave players a taste of this more flexible gameplay, but it was a limited selection of what will be available in the complete game in November.

EA and DICE have released a new Battlefield 2042 gameplay clip, revealing five new specialties for the game, featuring new characters like Sundance, Navin Rao, and Dozer. These other experts have unique access to a wide range of technologies, including wingsuits, hacking tools, riot shields, the capacity to see nearby adversaries through walls, and more. Some players have criticized Battlefield 2042’s specialty system for promoting lone-wolf playstyles while discouraging teamwork. Still, a new EA blog post promises sceptics that the whole game will play differently with all of its systems in place.

Battlefield 2042 appears to be in better shape than its problematic beta builds, based on fresh gameplay footage and anticipated post-beta upgrades. DICE has promised and demonstrated a variety of adjustments to the UI, gameplay, and more – as well as additional content (such as the five specialists shown above) – to alleviate some of the concerns. In addition, more specialists are likely to be introduced to the game in post-launch upgrades, though there’s no word on what new devices or bonuses they might bring. However, community pressure continues to mount for DICE to abandon Battlefield 2042’s specialists in favor of standard classes. Still, the team appears to be doubling down on the system, implying that the decision is likely too crucial to the game to be changed.

DICE is notorious for making significant modifications to its games over time, so there is room for the developer to tweak how specialists work if necessary. However, if it makes too many changes, it risks irritating players who appreciate the specialist system. Only time will tell if these characters and their talents grow on gamers, but the launch specialists will be more diverse than the Battlefield 2042 test, allowing for some exciting gaming chances.

On November 19, 2021, Battlefield 2042 will be released for the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
